about

You know how when you're a kid, your mind is blown by the difference between a flat map of the world and a globe? Just me? Fine. In a nutshell, I saw a flat map's distorted version of Antarctica and thought it was the biggest continent in the world... then the globe told me I was wrong. In a similar vein, I thought that the sun circled the earth (wrong). I thought that the stars in the sky were "cute little guys" (wrong). I thought that the sun circled the earth (wrong). Etc. Basically, on a cosmic level I was wrong at every turn. And somehow, learning that our giant sun was a pretty average star, and those little pinpricks of light were enormous made me feel pretty insignificant in the whole grand scheme of the universe. So not only am I wrong about everything, the more that I learn, the less important I am.

The bridge talks about all these other misconceptions that people have. You know, we're all "wrong when [we thought we] were right" about a lot of things. (It's not just me and Antarctica.) The last "misconception" is this: "If you think that heaven is high up in the clouds and if your prayer is going to reach it, you gotta pray really loud, and if God cares to find you he's gotta look around through all of his creation... well, that's a common misconception."

After all that talk about how insignificant I felt in this huge universe, and the whole "you can be wrong when you were sure right" theme, it seemed incredibly fitting. You're wrong, dear listener, when you feel that God can't hear you because you're just some little speck within a speck. You're wrong to feel insignificant. See: The Bible.

Anyway, "I don't know much, but I know that I don't always know... but this much I know: I am known."

People tell me that this song is funny... honestly, that's not really what I was going for. I hope you get it.
